Refinement

As I near the end of this project, "completion" is an ever-changing target. Most of the time I don't know how I'm going to complete a section until I actually get into it with the brick. Often I'll just stall out entirely... I'll get so wrapped up in "doing it right" that I don't know where to start. I find it's best to just try something, ANYTHING, or I'll never get anywhere. There's always room to refine things, to revise what's already been done. The roof sections are quite full of this, none so much as the 2nd floor roof - a 9-sided "P"-shaped area with multiple intersecting slopes and only a couple right angles. Above is my first attempt at the upper roof section. I have a couple ideas to try to fill in the remaining gaps... we'll see what I decide on.

I should be finished building in the next week or so. Here's my remaining build list:
  • Garden pergola
  • Garden center
  • Poolside patio
  • Children's wing pergola
  • Children's wing roof
  • Carport/Guest wing flat roof
  • Servants' wing - long dormer window
  • 2nd Floor roof - angled areas
  • Chimneys
  • Various small gaps to fill in landscaping
  • Trees, flowers, plants, vines
Beyond the "build", I still have a couple items to get it "show ready" - skirting, plexiglass, and I have to make sure everything fits into boxes.

I love that with a building this large, even though I'm not done yet, there are still plenty of angles that look like a finished product:

Timing Is Crucial...

As I write this, there are 101 days left until Brickworld 2015, where I plan to debut Wingspread in it's finished state. I realized today just how quickly I need to work to get everything done. With 14 weeks left, I need to get at least one of the following done each week if I want to get done in time:
  1. Pool wall - Children's wing
  2. Pool wall - Servant's wing
  3. Garden wall - Servant's wing
  4. Garden wall - Guest's wing/Carport
  5. Terrace landscaping
  6. Pool landscaping
  7. Garden landscaping
  8. Roof (This is probably a multi-week project)
  9. Trees, foliage
  10. Cars for the carport
  11. Lighting
  12. Table skirting and acrylic bariers
  13. Storage/transport planning
I was able to get most of #1 done tonight... perhaps I can get through two items this week. Time to get into high gear!

Halfway, sort of.

Wahoo! I've now completed the walls for the terrace side of the building (left side of photo). This marks the halfway point for the house's walls.

Of course, this is not halfway for the project as a whole - I will still need to complete:
  • Landscaping - This thing's got a lot of grass all around!
  • Pool - The beginning of it is in the upper left of this photo.
  • Garden - Will be in the upper right area, currently covered by bags and cups of brick.
  • Roof - This will be a large undertaking in itself; the real house has varied roof pitches all over, multiple chimneys, many pergolas, and a very tall center section with an interesting curved windowed lookout area.
  • Trees - The real property has plenty of these.
  • Cars - The garage will be getting a couple old-fashioned cars, 1930s/40s era style.
  • Table skirting - Not LEGO, but I will be doing something to dress up the wooden tables so they look good at shows, and I will be hiding the pink insulation that I use for elevation.
Once it's all done, I also need to figure out the best way to box it up. Each section is made to come apart easily, but I have no idea how well it will box at this point. Time will tell!
